Erste AM ESGenius® Score

The Erste AM ESGenius® Score evaluates the sustainability performance of companies and countries. These entities are assessed based on ethical and ESG risk factors. ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. The data is sourced from long-standing partners ISS ESG and MSCI ESG.

The original distributions of company and country ratings from ISS ESG and MSCI ESG were analyzed. Differences in the distribution functions of the two ESG data providers were identified. To work with approximately similar distributions, statistical adjustments (including transformation and standardization) are applied to align skewness and steepness. The original ranking of companies/countries by the respective research partners remains unaffected by these adjustments.

The ESGenius® Score combines the data geometrically. This approach ensures that companies with differing ratings from the two providers do not simply average out. For example, a company rated well by one provider but poorly by the other will not achieve a high score. Only companies rated well by both providers can achieve a high ESGenius® Score.

For countries, the ESGenius® Score considers not only the sustainability performance of the state itself but also, where sufficient data is available, the sustainability performance of companies based in that country. This includes information such as respect for human rights and inequality, as well as corporate data like CO₂ emissions, violations of anti-money laundering regulations, and labor rights.

This makes the model more dynamic, as corporate data is updated more frequently than country data. In addition to the country ratings from research partners, publicly available data is also used to assess sovereign issuers—such as data from the World Bank or the United Nations (UN).

The ESGenius® Score ranges from 0 to 100 points. A minimum score of 50 points is required for companies and sovereign bonds to be eligible for investment. Two funds are exceptions: ERSTE RESPONSIBLE BOND EM CORPORATE and ERSTE RESPONSIBLE BOND GLOBAL HIGH YIELD. For these, the minimum score is 30 points, and companies must perform better than their sector median. The minimum score is reviewed regularly and may be adjusted as needed.
